John Preddy Tournament - Special Day For All!

After the golf course management made some last minute changes there was a bit of a chaotic start to the John Preddy Tournament with the tee time put back an hour.

This meant the last group teed off around 1.15pm, however, once everyone got underway the course opened up and with the fairways in good nick and the weather being kind everyone enjoyed a special day.

Driving around the course as Marshall, yours truly could see the greens were lightning quick so the scores wouldn’t be high and putting might be the key to winning.

Playing A and C courses with the cut at handicap 18 players from both flights were going well after nine holes. Dave Keats 18 points, Steve Durey 19 points and Brian Maddox 20 points in the B flight and Mashi Kaneta 18 points, “Banjo” Bannister 19 points were going well. But it was the in-form man John Hughes in the A flight who was looking dangerous scoring 22 points at the half way stage.

Coming into the clubhouse after 18 holes were Mashi and “Banjo” who had similar back nines to have 35 points each. Steve Durey dropped off a little but he too finished with 35 points,  whilst Brian Maddox fell away badly only scoring 10 points blaming his knee replacement as the excuse!

Jack Robertson had a great back nine getting 19 points to finish with 35 points as well but it was Dave Keats who had the best chance to win the title. Dave was sitting green-side on the 18th for 3 receiving two shots on the hole and with 34 points in the bag, with only about 20 feet to the pin. But alas, he thinned his chip over the green and could only manage 7 for 1 point to finish with all the others on the same score of 35!

Back to the favourite John Hughes who only had 10 points after 6 holes on the back nine and was maybe beginning to choke a little? Well John finished bogey, double bogey, double bogey to end up with a total of 36 points and then had to wait nervously in the clubhouse to see if anyone would come storming through the field to beat him.

When all scorecards were double and treble checked it was indeed John Hughes who won the John Preddy Memorial Trophy out on his own with 36 points but it was going to be close on count back’s to sort out the other places in both A and B flights.
