Rayong Green Valley Country Club

Monday 23rd November

There was a great turnout with 86 golfers taking part in our increasingly popular tournament that raised a fantastic 90,000 Baht for our adopted Children’s Charity, the ‘Drop In Centre for Streetkids.’

The Green Valley course was in good condition except the greens had been lightly sanded which made the speed inconsistent – but not slow! Good organisation by the course staff with players starting simultaneously from the 1st and 10th tees without any hitches. Some tees in their forward (weekend) positions which made holes shorter than normal and may account for the large number of players beating their handicaps. No significant hold-ups during the round and most groups finishing within 4 1/2 hours. The field was split into two flights, the A Flight being handicaps 0 – 18 and the B Flight handicap 19 and above.

Trophies

For the first time there was a team competition with some handsome trophies for the winners. Trophies were also presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in both flights along with a host of awards for the technical prize winners. Last year’s winner John Hughes gave it all he had to try to retain the trophy scoring 20 Stableford points on the front nine holes and a pretty impressive 19 points on the more difficult back nine, but, unfortunately it wasn’t enough. He did have the consolation of winning the team prize trophy with his team mates Glen Cunningham, Alan Sullivan and Brian Maddox. The individual winner in the A Flight was Banjo Bannister followed by runner up Tony Scambler who beat Clive Robinson on a count back. In the B Flight Dave Keats had a good round again, as he did last year, but had to settle for third place, Dean Roberts scored an impressive 40 points but could only manage second place behind this year’s winner P.J. Redmond who won with a brilliant round scoring 42 points.

Xmas Carols from the 'Streetkids'

After the game all the golfer’s were treated to some carol singing by the children from the drop in centre and a superb buffet at the U Too Bar on 2nd Rd. where the presentation of trophies was made and a lucky draw took place. Among the prizes were free green fees for Green Valley, free golf lessons with David Race, gift vouchers for local restaurants and loads of booze!

The proceeds from the John Preddy Memorial Tournament were presented to Father Larry from the children’s charity that has been adopted by The Bunker Boy’s.

On Thursday the street kids from the Drop In Centre visited The Bunker to receive a cash donation. The assembled golfers were lucky enough to be treated to Christmas Carols sang in very good English by the children who turned up in force.

Father Larry received the cash on behalf of the charity and expressed his gratitude to all the golfers who participated in the annual tournament. Anyone wishing to get involved in helping these unfortunate children can visit their website www.fr-ray.org (Drop In Centre) and make a donation or call Derek on +66 (0) 852869673.

Green Valley

Playing a Medal round at Green Valley is always a pleasure but it is even better when the green fees are as inexpensive as the price the Pattaya Sports Club have negotiated!

The cut was set at handicap 17 and Hugh O’Donnell thought he had done enough to win the B Flight when he came into the clubhouse with a three under par net 69. But it wasn’t good enough as Steve Durey came in with a fantastic five under par to take the kitty, PJ Redmond came third a distant five shots behind Hugh.

Alan Sullivan got back to winning ways after his recent slump in form to win the A Flight with a three under par ahead of Koji in second place and Mashi in third and yet again Gerry Cooney missed out on the prizes by losing to Mashi on a count back!

Khao Kheow

Not sure what went on at Khao Kheow today, playing Stableford the scores are usually pretty average. However, today Geoff Hart tore the course up winning with 41 points, giving the reason for his astonishing score that his putter was red hot! “They were going in from everywhere” he said.

Trailing five points behind came Colin Greig to finish runner up and one point further back came Gordon Melia to take third place.

Results:

1st Geoff Hart (hcp 20) 41 points

Bang Pra

The higher handicap players like to play Stableford as it gives them a better chance to win and today proved the point with the first three places going to golfer’s with handicaps in the 20′s.

Colin Stokes took the honours with 37 points with PJ a close second, whilst Jack Robertson was a couple of points further back in third place. Gerry Cooney playing off a 10 handicap came in fourth with 33 points.

Results:
