"Stan the Man"

Pool Championship

Monday 20th April 2009

Monday night is pool night in The Bunker Bar and with The Flintstone Bar the opponents tonight a fun evening was anticipated. Unfortunately our opponents didn’t show up and after failing to contact them by phone we decided to have our own impromptu “Annual Championship”.

Drawn first out of the hat was “Stan the Man” (Quiet please – game on!!!)  to play “Steady” Bob Colley. There was a bit of nip and tuck to start with but eventually Stan knocked a few balls in and had Bob on the back foot.

Bob played his usual safe game to gradually get himself back into the frame but Stan got on the black first.

"Captain" Tony

Brian Wilkins and “Captain” Tony were next and it was Brian who took the initiative to get a few balls ahead.

Yours truly was up next drawn against who else but “Ta”! who usually beats me when I give her away to the opposition in darts matches.

Colin Stokes

Colin Stokes came up against Geoff Parker who only plays for the pool team if we’re short. Colin fancied his chances because he didn’t know Geoff regularly plays pool for fun with his girl “Tuk” and sure enough Geoff wiped the floor with a bemused Colin who left the table with his tail between his legs calling Geoff a lucky so and so!

The first semi final had Ta playing Stan so it was “Quiet please – Game on!!! Ta has been in sparkling form lately and it was to continue against

Stan as she played steadily all the way to leave Stan with two balls left on the table and a beaten man blaming everything on the beer!

Geoff the surprise of the night took on Brian in the other semi and the pendulum swung both ways throughout the match but Geoff’s superb long pots won it for him in the end so it was Geoff to meet Ta in the final.

The final started with both players a little nervous but Ta gradually got into her stride and knocked a couple down, this got Geoff going and he got down to his last striped ball before the black, unfortunately he had snookered himself and gave two shots away.

Amazingly Ta potted all five of her balls and left a tricky shot on the black which she missed by a whisker leaving Geoff to “shop up” and win the Championship.
