John Preddy Memorial Tournament 2009

Monday 23rd November

There was a great turnout with 86 golfers taking part in our increasingly popular tournament that raised a fantastic 90,000 Baht for our adopted Children’s Charity, the ‘Drop In Centre for Streetkids.’

The Green Valley course was in good condition except the greens had been lightly sanded which made the speed inconsistent – but not slow!  Good organisation by the course staff with players starting simultaneously from the 1st and 10th tees without any hitches. Some tees in their forward (weekend) positions which made holes shorter than normal and may account for the large number of players beating their handicaps. No significant hold-ups during the round and most groups finishing within 4 1/2 hours. The field was split into two flights, the A Flight being handicaps 0 – 18 and the B Flight handicap 19 and above.

Trophies

Trophies

For the first time there was a team competition with some handsome trophies for the winners. Trophies were also presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in both flights along with a host of awards for the technical prize winners. Last year’s winner John Hughes gave it all he had to try to retain the trophy scoring 20 Stableford points on the front nine holes and a pretty impressive 19 points on the more difficult back nine, but, unfortunately it wasn’t enough. He did have the consolation of winning the team prize trophy with his team mates Glen Cunningham, Alan Sullivan and Brian Maddox. The individual winner in the A Flight was Banjo Bannister followed by runner up Tony Scambler who beat Clive Robinson on a count back. In the B Flight Dave Keats had a good round again, as he did last year, but had to settle for third place, Dean Roberts scored an impressive 40 points but could only manage second place behind this year’s winner P.J. Redmond who won with a brilliant round scoring 42 points.

After the game all the golfer’s were treated to some carol singing by the children from the drop in centre and a superb buffet at the U Too Bar on 2nd Rd. where the presentation of trophies was made and a lucky draw took place. Among the prizes were free green fees for Green Valley, free golf lessons  with David Race, gift vouchers for local restaurants and loads of booze!
