There was a packed golf course when we arrived at Bang Pra for a Medal round today which resulted in having to tee off on the 10th and having to endure another painfully slow round of golf! It didn’t bother Paul Smith though, he had a level par round which was enough to win the A Flight. PJ, who found himself in the A Flight, as the cut was handicap 19, took the runner up spot beating Mashi on a count back. After a break down in Phuket Reg Smart was glad to be back, Reg won the B Flight beating Tom Jones on a count back and Graeme Preston got in the frame for a change claiming third place a shot behind.

Rayong CC

On a busy holiday which the course must have overbooked the golf so slow it was painful, but was Sunny Khanna made a happy return to Thailand, gradually getting into the swing of things and taking the honours in the A Flight. Playing Stableford Tony Robbins came runner up a couple of points behind with Gary Warburton edging out John Hughes on a count back to claim third place. In the B Flight lady golfer Jackie McPherson had the best round of the day and won the B Flight for the first time, winning with a fabulous 41 points. Darren Bennett playing his first game with The Bunker Boy’s came second ahead of Jack Robinson in third.

Tony Scambler had another good round winning the A Flight with 38 points. Dave Warburton had the best round of the day scoring 41 points to easily win the B Flight, Laurence Harding took second place, which put him in the lead for the golfer of the month title race and Paul Edgar came third a couple of points further back.

Emerald

Playing a Stableford round at Emerald there was a smaller field than usual but it didn’t bother Tom Jones! Tom had his best round in a while and he put it all down to his new driver that he bought himself for his birthday, winning with 37 points. Tony Scambler had a decent round also, as he has been struggling lately, but he took the runner up spot a few points behind Tom. Alan Sullivan came third and Marion Melia beat fellow lady golfer Jackie McPherson on a count back to claim fourth place.

Khaow Kheow

Some very surprising results today in the Stableford competition with the tee boxes further back than usual! A record low score won the A Flight, John Hughes the very surprised winner with a measly 29 points, only one point behind was Geoff Cox and Peter Platt came in third a further point behind. Lady golfer Jackie McPherson came third in the B Flight, Mike Corner took the runner up spot and it’s anybody’s guess how Kenny Chung scored 38 points but that’s what he won the B Flight with!

Reg Smart returned from up ‘The Village’ with recharged batteries and promptly won the B Flight coming into the clubhouse with a level par score on his card. Mike Corner is picking up points here and there keeping him in touch with the golfer of the month contenders, Mike finished second ahead of Ken Young who was in the money for the second time this year to claim third place! Alan Sullivan got back to winning ways after a barren spell, winning the A Flight just a single shot ahead of Geoff Hart (who’s still not used to being in the A Flight), Tony Robbins settled for third place having returned from another ‘working holiday’ in the Philippines!

Wednesday 10th February 2010

Treasure Hill

A large field turned up for this tough but popular course and there were some great scores in the A Flight! With the cut set unusually high at handicap 18 Geoff Hart was disappointed to find himself in the A Flight, his 36 points would have been enough to win the B Flight but it was only enough to take second place where he beat Paul Smith on a count back, John Graham had another good round winning with 38 points. The B Flight was decided on a count back, Mike Corner just shading it from Laurence and PJ did enough to take third spot with 30 points.

Monday 8th February 2010

Green Valley

After more problems with the booking times we eventually teed off around 40 minutes late (high season tourists appear to be given preference over Pattaya Sports Club members who play all year round!) Obviously the round was slow with too many golfers on the course but we soldiered on anyway. Harry Lankoff who’s just returned from snow covered Canada enjoyed being back in the sun by winning the B Flight with 39 points, a point ahead of in-form Laurence and Mike Corner brought up the rear with a steady 35 points. Paul Smith won the A Flight with the same number of points, John Graham and Gary Warburton finishing second and third respectively.

Those soldiering on struggled with flooded fairways and greens sometimes under water, but the star of the show, who mastered the conditions was William Macey who shot a brilliant four under to win the A Flight. Tony Scambler did pretty good too taking runner up place one shot ahead of JJ Harney. We had a first time winner in the B Flight, Neil Griffin taking the honours one shot ahead of Jackie McPherson and Wednesday’s hero Laurence came down to earth with a pretty dismal nett 82 to finish third!

Wednesday 3rd February 2010

Crystal Bay

There were some fairly mediocre scores at Crystal Bay, unusually, because this course doesn’t play as tough as it’s neighbour Mountain Shadow, the exceptions being both A and B Flight winners. Tony Robbins scored 39 Stableford points to win the A Flight with a count back needed to separate Alan Harris and John Graham, Alan just edging out John. The best score today was shot by Laurence Harding who scored a magnificent 43 points to win the B Flight a full 10 points ahead of Tom Jones who came runner up beating PJ on a count back.

Monday 1st February 2010

Bang Pra

Last week’s star man was shining again this week! Jack Robertson began where he left off by winning the B Flight again, this time, playing Medal format he romped home with a six under par score to beat Lawrence Harding who fancied his chances with a three under par round, but not today with Jack in this form! Third place went to ‘Skinny’ who, playing his last game before returning to the UK, beat Mike Corner on a count back. It was closer in the A Flight with just one shot separating the top three. Paul Smith won by a single shot and Art Benavidez took the runner up spot beating Alan Sullivan on a count back.

Results:

Lawrence Harding, now enjoying his retirement in Thailand, was pleased to find himself in second place and Duncan Lee made a rare appearance and was astounded to discover he’d won third prize with an embarrassing 26 points! The A Flight was a little closer, JJ beating Alan Sullivan by a point and Tony Robbins claimed third place with 32 points.

Green Valley

After some confusion on the first tee caused by double booking by the Green Valley staff the golfer’s eventually teed off and what a great day it turned out! There was a count back required to determine the A Flight winner, William just beating JJ Harney by virtue of a better back nine and Gary Warburton beat Paul Smith also on a count back to nick third place. It wasn’t so close in the B Flight where Jack Robertson beat Reg by a stroke and Arthur Rowley was pleased to find his nett 79 was enough to steal third place

With weather that was ideal for golf and the course in great condition the scene was set for a great day’s golf. ‘Skinny’ Newton had the best round shooting a level par 36 Stableford points and, as any golfer will tell you that’s some going at Treasure Hill. ‘Skinny’ won the B Flight ahead of Geordie Les Humphrey and fellow Geordie Tom Jones claimed third place. Gary Warburton took the A Flight while a count back decided second and third places, another Geordie, Alan Harris beating Mashi to finish runner up.

The long drive to this lovely course is always worth it and Paul Smith certainly didn’t suffer from it as he won with a fantastic six under par nett 64 to take the A Flight. Dave Dolle had a good sub par round to take the runner up spot and, with the cut set at handicap 17 Lee Butler found himself in the A Flight and managed to take the third place. This course is one of Tom Jones’ favourite courses and it showed in his game today, Tom won the B Flight with a two under par round, Mike Corner was a shot behind and Jack Robertson came third a couple of shots further back.

Rayong CC

The condition of the course at Rayong Country Club is improving little by little and is still great value for money. In two flights with the cut set at handicap 15 Alan Harris had the best round of the day to win the A Flight a shot ahead of William who, in turn, was a point ahead of Paul Smith who beat JJ on a count back to take third place. It was close in the B Flight too where Geoff Hart won by a point ahead of Skinny who again was one point ahead of John Hughes who beat Mike Corner on a count back!

Wednesday 30th December2009

Green Valley

With the Golfer of the Month still up for grabs, the 4 players in contention were grouped together for the final game of the month. Geoff Parker got off to a flying start with a birdie on the 1st and everything was tight up to the 4th and 5th holes where Mike Corner suffered a pair of disasters which effectively put him out of contention at this early stage. By the turn only a couple of shots separated the 3 leading protagonists up to the par 5, 14th hole where Colin Greig proceeded to put 2 tee shots into the hazard and walked off with an 8 on what was on the day one of the easiest holes on the course. Geoff was beginning to pull a few shots clear, but Gerry Cooney was still in contention until disaster struck on the par 3, 16th hole. Playing his 2nd shot from the greenside bunker, the ball flew the green and raced up the cart path out of sight of the green. With no reasonable place to drop either side of the path Gerry decided to pay a “crazy golf” shot, putting the ball down the path with the reverse blade of the putter, hoping to bounce the ball off the wall and round towards the green. However the golf gods were not shining on Gerry today and the ball bounced over the wall and into the cactus garden. Gerry eventually walked off the green with a 6 and left the door open wide for Geoff Parker to finish the last 2 holes with bogies and complete the round with a 3 under total of 69 nett and win the last golfer of the month trophy in 2009! In the B Flight Lee Butler beat Tom Jones on a count back and PJ claimed third place.

With the recent reduction in green fee price the Bunker Boy’s decided to make another visit to Eastern Star, a course we have played sparingly throughout the year, due to poor course conditions and lack of value for money in comparison to other local courses. We found the course generally in good condition, although the greens still leave something to be desired. The course was quiet and the groups played the round without any holdups. The cut was set at handicap 16 and Colin Greig beat Geoff Parker by a single point to win with Mashi coming in third a couple of points back. Mike Corner scored the most points today winning the B Flight with 37 points which is no mean feat at Eastern Star, Kenny Chung came second a point ahead of Dave Keats.
